Water Treatment is an important investment, especially in Arizona. In the valley of Arizona, the Water Quality Association (WQA) set up a chart for water quality 0 grains per hardness being soft and 10 grains per hardness being hard. The valley averages around 20 grains per hardness, being off the chart completely.

Because of this, it’s important to add a water treatment system to help reduce the hardness of your water. Call Second Opinion Plumbing to find out more, at 480-365-9555.

Helpful Plumbing Tips From Second Opinion Plumbing

Why does it seem like the times you really need a plumber are nights, weekends, and holidays? Chances are your plumber doesn’t want to make a house call during these times any more than you want to call them. What you may not know is that many plumbing problems are preventable! (Or at least can be fixed less expensively if addressed early on.) At Second Opinion Plumbing, we know how important family and friends are so here is a list of things that can help you spend as much uninterrupted time with them as possible!

Learn How to Check For a Leak

If your monthly water bill seems higher than normal and your water usage has remained the same, chances are you have a leak somewhere. One way to check is to turn off any faucet or appliances that use water, like your fridge, washer, and dishwasher. Then walk out to your water meter and watch it. If that meter is still moving, there’s a big sign that there is still water moving somewhere! This is a problem that needs attention and fast. Make sure to shut off the water and call Second Opinion Plumbing before the problem becomes bigger!!

Don’t Ignore Water or Smells Around the Toilet

It doesn’t have to be a lot of water, a constant wetness or puddle on the floor around the toilet may be a sign that the wax ring seal needs replaced. The toilet’s wax ring also creates an airtight seal that prevents sewer gases from rising up into your home. Sewer gases typically contain hydrogen sulfide gas, which has an obnoxious odor similar to that of rotten eggs. Besides smelling terrible, these gases can be harmful to your health. If these odors are invading your home, wax ring damage is likely to blame. Other toilet issues also cause water puddles, such as condensation on the tank or a leaky joint where the cold-water line meets the tank. Check these before pulling the toilet off to replace a wax ring that may still be intact. Any leaks can rot the floor or subfloor, so address them quickly.

Flush Your Water Heater at Least Once a Year

It is recommended that you flush your water heater as a part of regular home maintenance. Draining ensures the long life of your water heater by removing lime and other mineral deposits. These minerals over time will impair the functioning of your appliance especially in Arizona with our hard water. By doing this simple task, your water heater should remain in good shape for many more years. If you are not a do-it-yourselfer, call us and we will be more than happy to keep your home running efficiently.

Fixing That Rotten Egg Smell

Occasionally a homeowner will notice a bad smell coming from the vicinity of plumbing fixtures in the home. This may be caused by “dry trap.” If a fixture such as a shower or bathtub has not been used in a long time, the trap may dry out and thus allow sewer gas to come back into the home. The solution is to run water into the fixture and allow the trap to again fill up with water. If this does not solve the problem, it is time to call Second Opinion Plumbing!

Turn Off the Main Water Supply Before You Go on Vacation

Closing the valve on the main supply line cuts off water to the house but still allows outside sprinklers to work. If you do spring a leak inside, the line will be under some initial pressure, but it will not continue to spray water. Open up a couple of sink or tub faucets to release the water pressure off the lines. This might seem like a lot of work but it certainly is better to come home to a house that hasn’t been flooded.

Know When to Stop and Just Say NO

So you’re a handyman and have placed a leaky faucet or two, maybe even a toilet flapper, but if you have a major plumbing project, it’s a really good idea to call a plumber from the get-go! If you don’t know your own limitations, you could, and probably will end up paying more for a professional to fix your amateur mistakes!

Avoid Caustic Cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners are designed to eat away at whatever is obstructing your pipe. While this can help clear away the debris that is contributing to your clog, the chemical drain cleaner can’t distinguish between debris and pipe. This could lead to serious damage to your plumbing system. Use a natural drain cleaner that eats away clogs through enzymatic action. It doesn’t work as quick as caustic chemicals, but it is much safer for your pipes.

Pull Out the Shop Vacuum

When an object falls in the toilet, like a toothbrush, comb or a toy, a plunger may not be the solution- it might only push the object in deeper. Instead, suck out the water and the object with a wet/dry shop vac!

Price Quotes

How can a plumber realistically estimate a price for a job they have not seen? Never accept a price quote without an in-person inspection and make sure you always get a written estimate. While plumbers can’t and should not quote a price without seeing the job, they can give you a ballpark idea on certain small, predictable jobs — installing a new shower head or clearing a clogged sink, for example. But remember that even small jobs can be more complicated than one can realize.
